From the dry gruner veltiner of Austria, to the fiano of southern Italy, there are many lesser-known white wine varietals with merits to rival that of their more popular cousins such as chardonnay and riesling. Pinot gris and pinot grigio have already built a substantial fan base thanks to their bright citrus notes and crisp acidity. Adventurous palates can look to an aromatic gewurztraminer or if you’re after something that’s versatile at the table, viognier can work well with richer meat dishes and spiced fare including Indian, Moroccan and Thai cuisine.
