Hillcrest Vineyard, Yarra Valley
The small, effectively dry-grown vineyard was established by Graeme and Joy Sweet, and is now owned by Shirley Zhang and family. The high quality pinot noir, chardonnay, merlot and cabernet sauvignon grown on the property were particularly important resources when Coldstream Hills was in its infancy. – James Halliday

Landaire at Padthaway Estate, Padthaway
David and Carolyn Brown have been major grapegrowers in Padthaway for 2 decades. Landaire evolved from a desire, after many years of growing grapes at their Glendon vineyard, to select small quantities of the best grapes to produce wines under their own label. It has proved a sure-fire recipe for success. The 1850s stables have since been converted into a cellar door, with accommodation available in the original 1901 shearers' quarters and 1947 cottage. In '17 Carolyn and David purchased nearby Padthaway Estate. – James Halliday

Lisa Mcguigan Wines, Hunter Valley
Lisa McGuigan is a fourth-generation member of a famous Hunter Valley winemaking dynasty, started many decades ago by Perc McGuigan and more recently led by Brian McGuigan. In ‘99, Lisa started Tempus Two from her garage, and under the McGuigan-Simeon (now Australian Vintage) umbrella, the volume rose to 250 000 dozen before she left in '07 to start a retail wine business. In ’10 she turned full circle, starting her own business in the Hunter Valley and using the winemaking skills of Liz Silkman, whom she had headhunted for Tempus Two, and who is now also chief winemaker at First Creek Wines. Located within the Blaxland’s complex on Broke Road, the VAMP venue and wine room brings together wine, oysters, art and fashion. – James Halliday

Mitchelton, Nagambie Lakes
Mitchelton was founded by Ross Shelmerdine and named after the explorer Thomas Mitchell, who passed by here. Ross had a splendid vision for the striking winery, restaurant, now-iconic observation tower and surrounding vineyards. Owned by Gerry Ryan OAM (founder of Jayco) since '12, Mitchelton is a destination in its own right, with music concerts hosting such varied luminaries as Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Jimmy Barnes; a hotel and spa also opened in '18. Mitchelton has estate vineyards in both Nagambie and Heathcote and purchases fruit from growers across Victoria. – James Halliday

Murray Street Vineyards, Barossa Valley

Raidis Estate, Coonawarra

Saltfleet, McLaren Vale
Saltfleet is a micro-operation created by a couple of young surfers with their gaze on a future built on the right grapes, rather than the wrong ones. Saltfleet is focused on fruit from lauded sites, non-invasive handling and pulpy, effusively energetic wines with a winning immediacy and mouth-watering deliciousness. The winsome approach is built on hand harvesting, semi-carbonic fermentations smattered with a seasoning of whole bunches, gentle extractions, a short élevage in used wood and minimal adds (other than psychologically reassuring dollops of sulphur dioxide). Willunga 100 Wines, McLaren Vale
Established in 2005 by David Gleave MW and John Ratcliffe, Willunga 100 is dedicated to showcasing the unique districts of McLaren Vale through dry-grown, bush-vine grenache. Winemaker Renae Hirsch continues this focus on expressive, site-driven wines from single vineyards across the region, including the historic Smart Vineyard in Clarendon – home to 1922 bush-vine grenache – and Willunga 100’s own 19-hectare Blewitt Springs site Blind Spot Vineyard – majority grenache with a plot of 80-year-old shiraz vines and newly added Rhone white varietals. In 2025, Willunga 100 also opened The Grenache Room in Blewitt Springs, offering an intimate new space to experience the depth and diversity of McLaren Vale grenache.

Zema Estate, Coonawarra
