John Kosovich Wines

Western Australia | Swan Valley

Our Review

Ivan (known as Jack) Kosovich and his brothers immigrated from Croatia shortly before the outbreak of WWI and Jack purchased the property in 1922. A 7m white gum beam cut from a tree felled by Jack in the nearby hills became the supporting structure for the cellar roof. Son, John, took over winemaking aged 15, making fortified wines and rough red wines. In the ’60s, John changed the vineyard to produce white wines. Riesling was the first variety planted, chenin blanc, chardonnay and verdelho followed. In ’89 John established a 3.5ha vineyard in Pemberton, changing the face of the business forever, albeit continuing with the magnificent Rare Muscat. In ’95 John became a member of the Order of Australia for his long contribution to the wine industry. Son Anthony (Arch) came on board in ’94, taking over the winemaking a few years later. -JAMES HALLIDAY
