Our Review
When Scott Ireland and partner Jen Lilburn established Provenance Wines, they knew it wouldn't be easy starting a winery with limited capital and no fixed abode. The one thing the business had was Scott's 20+ years' experience operating contract wine services in the Hunter Valley, Barossa, Coonawarra, Mudgee, Clare Valley, Yarra Valley and Tasmania. He says he met so many dedicated small winemakers that he was hooked for life. In '04, Scott moved to Austins & Co as winemaker while continuing to grow the Provenance business, developing key relationships with growers in Geelong, the ultra-cool Macedon, Ballarat and Henty. In '16, Sam Vogel, Scott’s long-term associate winemaker, stepped up to join the business as a partner and they took a long-term lease of 25% of the Fyansford Paper Mill, refurbishing the heritage-listed 1870s local bluestone buildings. -JAMES HALLIDAY
