Inkwell

South Australia | McLaren Vale | Kuarna Land

Our Review

Dudley Brown and Dr Irina Santiago-Brown have prioritised organics and sustainability as
guiding principles for their estate, both for wine quality and an essential belief in the importance of meaningful environmental action. Dudley bought the shiraz-dominant vineyard in ’03, rejuvenating and replanting – while also supplying fruit for some of the region’s more famous bottlings – but it was perhaps Irina’s ’14 doctoral thesis on sustainability that propelled the pair to drive the estate to ever-greater heights. Inkwell was named Australia’s first Regenerative Organic Certified vineyard in ’23, joining a complement of only around 20 growers worldwide. That commitment is mirrored by exemplary wine quality and a relentless pursuit of characterful expressions. Shiraz, primitivo, grenache, mataro and viognier have more recently been joined by grillo and arinto. Alternative vessels, judicious skin contact on whites and a spirit of deeply thoughtful adventure suffuse a truly exciting portfolio. -JAMES HALLIDAY
