Eisenstone

South Australia | Barossa Valley

Our Review

Stephen Cook called into a small local winery on a whim to ‘buy a few grapes’. Instantly hooked, he returned to SA and secured the Roseworthy graduate diploma in oenology. A vintage in California filled his wanderlust; a varied career in the Barossa Valley followed, rising steadily up the ranks. In ‘14, he decided to take a small plunge and embark on Eisenstone, its translation meaning the ironstone soil on which the early settlers planted their vineyards. He only makes single-vineyard or single-district shiraz, eschewing all other varieties. He is only interested in high-quality grapes, the use of top-quality oak, the tool to capture the message of the interaction between shiraz and its particular place. -JAMES HALLIDAY
