Chalmers
Bush Vine Inzolia 2024
Murray Darling - VicWhole-bunch pressed, wild fermentation, 12 months on lees in stainless steel. Where has inzolia (aka ansonica) been all this time? The answer is Sicily and Tuscany, but what a joy it is to see it in Australia, bringing such an extraordinary depth of flavour and savoury intrigue to the glass. This has citrus blossom, ripe stone fruits, citrus, pear and an almond nuttiness that segues into savoury territory alongside saline notes. It is creamy and buttery on the middle palate, but controlled beautifully in juicy acidity and tannin grip. What a top wine find. -
Angove Family Winemakers
Family Crest Pinot Gris 2025
McLaren ValeFrom the estate Angels Rise vineyard in the cool of Clarendon at 200m. This is a fruit-intense and aromatic expression; a wine of real purity and respectful flamboyance on the nose, while maintaining line and length. Poached Bosc and fresh Williams pears, sweet baking spices, very gris/grigio things, but there’s more detail here, with spring blossoms, a whiff of sea spray and something of a flinty mineral note. Dry, with intensity and restraint. It’s a distinct, characterful wine of place, and quite delicious. -
Aravina Estate
Single Vineyard Block 4 Chenin Blanc 2024
Margaret RiverA light gold hue and bright. A bit shy aromatically at first, although the palate is far from it – full of juicy acidity, lemon flavours with yuzu tonic, some beeswax and slippery phenolics adding some weight to a rather tight wine. Finally, a waft of quince, orange blossom and warm spice filters through. Don’t chill this down too much but do let it open in the glass. It’s worth the wait. -
Foxeys Hangout
Kentucky Road Single Vineyard Pinot Gris 2025
Mornington PeninsulaLuscious, intensely flavoured and a terrific drink. Spicy, orange zest, baked pears and apples, some pastry notes, too. Full bodied, the palate rich and coated with clotted-cream-like lees. The finish lingers, and you’ll want a top-up. -
Oliver's Taranga Vineyards
Fiano 2025
McLaren ValeSourced from five estate blocks, from six to 21 years old. Pressed mainly to steel, with about 15% in concrete eggs and 10% in second and third passage French oak; high solids with natural yeasts, 25% mlf, and no additions until sulphur at bottling. It’s another excellent release, with the warm and dry year highlighting what a great variety this is for the Vale. Golden apples, preserved lemon, grapefruit pith, sea spray, tonic, a hint of lemon curd and oyster shells. There’s intensity of fruit here, with a textural roundness preceding a pithily racy drive, suspending the flavours long. -
Scotchmans Hill
Bellarine Peninsula Pinot Gris 2025
GeelongA very bright green gold. Another excellent gris from Robin Brockett and the team at Scotchmans. Subtle aromas of orchard fruits, yellow apple and white flowers precede the dry, zesty and impeccably balanced palate. You couldn't ask for much more. -
Wangolina
Seasons Malvasia Istriana 2024
Mount BensonFrom Wangolina's Mount Benson vineyard. Planted in '19 from the Chalmers clone. 50% fermented on skins and 40% in ceramic-shaped egg amphora, the remainder in older oak. This is a wine you won't forget anytime soon; it will reshape your palate and take you down a winding road of glacé pear, apricot and rambutan flesh. You'll stop to admire its sticky ginger-syrup likeness, white pepper and jelly-bean gummy texture. A lovely oiliness to the palate, whipped by a dry but vapour-like finish. It's wine for contemplation and pleasure, and no doubt you'll be smiling like a Cheshire cat after sipping. -
Saddler's Creek
Single Suitcase Fiano 2025
Hunter ValleyFabulous from the first pour, with gentle florals, freshness and intensity, though without being overfruity. Palate breadth is the hallmark of this wine, making it a sensational pairing for food. Rock-solid winemaking by a pair of rising stars.
