New South Wales is home to some of the most diverse wine regions in the country, from the warmer climate of the Hunter Valley (which also has the cloud cover and ocean breezes to make grape growing ideal), to the high-altitude, cool-climate sites of Orange, and the relatively new and exciting region of Hilltops, which is best known for its orchard landscapes.

With such diversity, it's worth taking the time to get to know the wine styles and explore the breadth of NSW's wines.

New South Wales wine styles

The historic Hunter Valley, the oldest continuous wine region in Australia, is perhaps best known, and rightly so, for its revered semillon and shiraz. Bright and citrus-driven in youth, luscious and layered with age, try, for example, the 95-point semillon expressions from Brokenwood and Scarborough Wine Co below. Or sample Hunter shiraz with the "well-made, medium-weight" wine from Latitude 32.

If cooler-climate styles are more your thing, you can't go wrong with the four Orange wines below from producers Slow Wine Co and Highland Heritage. These include a pinot gris-dominant blend, a pinot noir, a sauvignon blanc and a chardonnay – all grape varieties which thrive in cooler climates.

Or if you're yet to try wines from the Hilltops region, try the 95-point pinot gris from Hungerford Hill, which has "impressive vinosity, focus and length".
