For those unfamiliar with the winery, Murray Street Vineyards was founded in 2001 as a partnership between Andrew Seppelt (a fifth-generation member of the Seppelt winemaking dynasty) and Bill Jahnke (an American entrepreneur and wine collector). Andrew was looking for a financial investor and Bill, impressed by the Rhône and Bordeaux varietal wines emerging from the Barossa Valley, was seeking an investment opportunity.

The pair met in the Barossa Valley and found common ground in their shared vision to produce world class, estate-grown wines, focusing on Rhône and Bordeaux varietals and blends. Shortly after their meeting, Bill purchased 100ha in Greenock and Gomersal on the Western Ridge of the Barossa Valley.

The original partnership dissolved in 2014, and Murray Street Vineyards is now a family-owned business led by Bill and his daughter Janai Brengman. The focus is still on Rhône and Bordeaux varieties, with the Greenock property growing over the years to encompass 67ha, planted to 13 different varieties on a patchwork of blocks with various soil profiles and microclimates.

If you’re visiting Murray Street Vineyards, for the launch event or on another day, make sure you check out the tasting room, which offers panoramic views of the vineyards and beautifully manicured garden. Guests can choose from either the Artisan or Estate tasting, where estate-grown wines are paired with artisanal cheeses.

In addition to planning the release of their new semillon and rosé vintages, Murray Street are working on furthering their sustainability efforts in the vineyard and planning for future enhancements to their guest facilities.

And while we can’t give you the details yet, Murray Street are working on a project to showcase single-site expressions from small, old-vine blocks in the Barossa. Stay tuned!

 Murray Street Icon Aria

2021 Murray Street Aria

A block and barrel selection from our treasured old vine blocks within the Greenock vineyard. Hand-selected barrels show soaring aromatics of blackberry pastille, violets, licorice, with complexing notes of star anise and ink well. Texture and flavour builds momentum as it draws long across the palate. Tannins are chalky, firm and very tight with a lovely subtle savoury mineral edge. A wine of commanding old vine power.

Best enjoyed: Pairs well with ribeye steak on the bone. This wine will benefit from a decant. Serve at 14°C.

Soaring notes of crème de cassis, paprika, fine cut cigar, graphite, and cinnamon/nutmeg spice. The tannin structure is very tight and very fine, drawing long across the palate to a subtle, detailed and aristocratic finish.
