Have you heard the saying, a rising tide lifts all boats? Well, that's exactly what the Australian Women in Wine Awards (AWIWA) is doing. The AWIWA has released a gin under its Hear Me Roar label, and 100 per cent of the profits go toward supporting women working in the wine industry.
After the sell-out success of the Hear Me Roar shiraz in 2019, the AWIWA has returned with a gin that is in production and ready for pre-order.
The proceeds from sales of Hear Me Roar – the Gin (yes, a nod to Helen Reddy's anthem 'I Am Woman'), will help bolster scholarships, mentoring programs and professional development for women in the Australian wine industry.
The second iteration of the project is being led by Lucid Distilling's chief distiller, winemaker and AWIWA board member, Beck Richardson.
"Having been in the wine industry for over 25 years, I love that I can give back and help support other women coming through. I feel it is our responsibility to do what we can to be the change we want to see.
"I love the energy that the Australian Women in Wine advisory board brings to this project and I feel fortunate to be surrounded by so many fantastic women who are not only colleagues, but also friends. The Hear Me Roar project is a great way to lift up the next generation of women in our wine community."
Across the wine industry women represent just 30 per cent of professionals and, at the pointy end, only 10 per cent of women hold senior roles.
The dry gin is infused with blackcurrant leaf, native finger lime and Tasmanian pepperberry, a winning combination suggested by Tracy Taylor of Tasmania's Southwood Vineyards. Prior to production, the AWIWA asked women in the industry to put forward their dream recipe for the kind of G they want to drink with their T.
Hear Me Roar – the Gin is $110 per bottle. It is available for pre-order and will be released in mid-November. For more information visit womeninwineawards.com.au.
