The Royal Sydney Wine Show just snuck into 2021, with trophies presented at a lunch held in Sydney yesterday (December 16).
Fifth-generation family winery Tyrrell’s Wines of the Hunter Valley was one of the event's big winners, with the 2013 vintage of their iconic Vat 1 Semillon collecting Best Wine of Show, Best White Wine, Best Mature White and Best Semillon.
Victoria’s Sutton Grange Estate was another major winner, taking out three trophies, including Best Red Wine and Best Shiraz for its 2018 Sutton Grange Syrah, as well as Best Small Producer. The recognition is a significant swansong for winemaker Melanie Chester, who is moving on from the Bendigo winery to join Giant Steps in the Yarra Valley.

The 2021 Turkey Flat Rosé made it a hat-trick by winning Best Rosé, having just won the same trophy at both the recent Royal Melbourne Wine Awards and Royal Adelaide Wine Show. The $25 wine is clearly one to seek out this summer.
The other winners include De Bortoli, which won three trophies for three different wines – the 2017 Deen De Bortoli Botrytis Semillon, 2020 Villages Tempranillo Touriga and Woodfired Sparkling Shiraz.
Shingleback, Eden Hall, Swings and Roundabouts, Josef Chromy Wines, Tahbilk and Robert Stein are among the other top producers to pick up trophies.
